Since 2018, Plastic Free Waterford has been working with local businesses, schools, youth groups and the Council to make Waterford plastic free. Most local businesses now offer non-plastic alternatives, lots of schools have banned single-use plastic drinks bottles and corporations are making their vending machines plastic free. This is awesome. But there’s more to do.
We still rely on single-use plastic way too much and with recycling rates in Ireland hovering around the 35% mark, that’s a lot of plastic that is ending up in landfill. Recycling can’t get us out of this mess, we simply need to stop using so much of it. We can stop buying so much of it, we can demand that our supermarkets decrease the amount of packaging and we can support the legislative actions of Ireland and the EU to decrease our reliance on the single-use. #noexcuseforsingleuse
